In 1980, Gregg Goldston conceived of a school of American mime theatre that was dedicated to creating a vision of mime from the perspective of American artists exploring the art. Founding members Gregg Goldston, Nicholas Johnson and Deborah Wasserman launched a program that has endured for 23 years. The additional vision and inherent integrity of Jeanine Thompson, Pamela Chermansky, Rick Wamer and Lorie Heald, representing past and present faculty, expresses the collective and valued contributions of individuals that have molded a program described in Marceau's words as having “...developed the boundaries of our art”.
These summer seminars concentrate on both company choreography and the development of individual identity in solo work. The school is designed to train mimes with a strong classical foundation and examine contemporary directions within the art.
The School for Mime Theatre, (then The Goldston & Johnson School for Mimes) hosted Marcel Marcau's Seminar in America on five occasions between 1986 and 1994. Since its inception, the school has hosted master classes and seminars with Thomas Leabhart, Leonard Pitt, Moni Yakim, Richmond Sheppard, Robert Post and Stefan Niedzialkowski.
Alithea continues to present Stefan Niedzialkowski and his one-week Beyond the Word seminar, a powerful introduction into his extraordinary vision of Polish mime theatre. The seminars are open to beginners and professionals alike.
The School has been in existence for 23 years, as of this summer. It is located in Gambier, Ohio, just northeast of Columbus, Ohio…5 minutes from Mt. Vernon. The location, Kenyon College, is set in the beautiful countryside amidst the rolling hills of Ohio farmland. This pastoral setting is the perfect retreat for an artistic seminar. A large state of the art dance studio and the Bolton Theater occupy most of our activities. Students live in efficiency apartments that have single bedrooms, refrigerators and microwaves, air conditioning, telephones, and additional gas barbecues to secure cooking matters. The school supplies kitchen utensils and bedding materials, but students often bring their own pillows and comforters. These apartments are a short walk from the studio. The campus has 4 restaurants, grocery store, bank, post office and the bookstore (favorite local hangout). The Pirates Cove is another great place to congregate over pizza at the end of the day. The campus is beautiful, comfortable and very safe.
Classes:
angels risingAll levels are welcome from beginning to advanced, as the classes are designed to accommodate both the introductory and advanced student. The art of mime has always been described as the physical grace of the dancer combined with genuine intent of the actor. The work is definitely physical. The day begins with conditioning and moves towards technical training. Strength and flexibility are very important to the mime actor. Acting and improvisation, although part of every class, become specific in afternoon classes.
The seminar closes with a free student performance attended by the community. These evenings are wonderful because the community loves these shows. They are there to see what the students have created and the performance solidifies the summer teachings.
